Newport Beach & Laguna Beach Engagement Session | Orange County Photographer

Engagement sessions provide so many more benefits than just pretty pictures. Many photographers tell you it is the best time to become acquainted with your photographer and their style prior to the wedding day. This is true. It is beneficial to photographer to know how you interact with each other, what your photographic and posing style is and how you’ll react to their work. This helps portrait time to run smoothly on the wedding day and ensure you’ll be happy with your wedding pictures. But that’s not the only benefit, there are many more benefits for you and your guests.

These cards are the first impression of your wedding that your guests will receive. Some of your out of town guests may have not met your fiancé yet or know who you are as a couple. Engagement sessions are a wonderful way to quickly set the tone for your wedding day and in a way introduce yourselves as a couple to a few long distance guests. It’s also a perfect time to relieve some stress in the midst of planning, reconnect with each other and remind yourselves why all of the stress is worth it.

For these reasons, Luke and I go out of our way to get to know you a little better prior to your engagement session. We ask a series of questions and work with you to select a location and style that best represents you as a couple. Ashley sent us a list of ideas and options for locations and themes within their engagement session. Her list included items such as:

“-elegant and beautful– pictures that make me want a blowup to put on our wall.
-some really neat artsy shots
-maybe some fun, silly shots at a park and a picnic with wine
-an old movie theatre with unique architecture since we both love movies and theatre
Gavan took me to a beach on our first date and I love beach sunsets, but I HATE wind and sand”

Being relatively new to Orange County, I got to work trying to find the best #JenandLuke, Live your dreams, life goals, lido village, newport beach, locations that would fit Ashley’s descriptions. I found that the oldest theater in Orange County that is still operational is the Lido Theatre in Newport Beach. Old theater, check!  Now, park near the beach, yet not on the beach, and enough grass for a scenic picnic with the ocean and sunset in the background… 20-30 minutes away is Crescent Bay in Laguna Beach. A picnic on a cliff overlooking the ocean and tide pools down below.  PERFECT!! Beach sunset and picnic with no sand. Luke and I spent a Sunday exploring these locations and checking the drive time between them. One of my favorite parts of this job- Adventure trips with my hubby (professional term: scouting locations).
I sent some photos to Ashley for confirmation on the locations and we were all set. We met in Newport for a few quick portraits and then drove down to Laguna Beach together. Time in the car is a great time to chat and get to know each other better without the camera in between us.

We were running behind schedule so we quickly set out the picnic. Wine does it again! Ashley and Gavan were really settling into the session, focusing on each other, making each other laugh and showing off who they are together. They are so cute together! Tons of giggles, silly faces and teasing one another.

I always check the sunset before a session. In the Palm Springs area, the closer you are to the mountain the earlier the sun will set and you’ll loose direct light. Now, I’m going to have to check the tides as well. We headed down to the beach with intensions to photograph those colorful and stunning beach sunsets on the tide pools. Weeellll…. There was no way of getting to them. The tide was in and blocked our access. Good thing we didn’t go earlier and get stuck out there. No worries though. Without any clouds in the sky and a light gradient of color for a sunset, we didn’t miss anything. We stayed on the beach and had fun creating elegant and timeless portraits. Ashley braved the sand and ocean water up to her knees. I’m so proud of her! Similarly, I like the beach, but can’t stand the sandy, salty drive home. The portraits are worth it all though.

Back to Newport for night shots at the Lido Theatre. It was just as envisioned with all the lights on. We continued to a few other spots Luke and I found on our adventure trip, but our session was cut short by security. Apparently, that area is all private property even though it is open to the public for shopping and services. We had plenty already and it was an awesome engagement session.
