One of my favorite compliments is “You really captured his character and personality! This was worth every penny!”, especially after a phone call like this. A typical phone conversation with mothers of teenage sons…
“My son is graduating high school and I really want a decent portrait of him before he leaves for college. He’s not really interested, but I’ve convinced him to do this for me. He’s really a great kid, but doesn’t like his picture taken. Could you please try your best to get him to smile for a decent picture?”
Me: “Of course! That’s not a problem! I really work on connecting with all of my clients. We’ll chat ahead of time and stylize the session to his interested. That way he’ll be a little more open to the portraits. I promise we’ll get plenty of great portraits for you to keep with you long after college.”
My conversation with Amber regarding her son, Zach, was no different. We chatted for a while discussing location options, interests and style. Zach would be visiting from Navarre High School in Florida for a summer trip so we had a short window. Figures it would be the hottest day of the year! You would have never guessed it watching Zach. The rest of us on the other hand… my shoes melted!!!!
Zach is indeed a great guy! We had no problem chatting throughout the session, getting to know each other more. With each click of the shutter Zach was more and more comfortable in front of the camera and open to anything I asked him to do.
It was quickly apparent that soccer was the highlight of Zach’s high school career and hope for the future. And Mom was so proud! Amber confessed during our pre-session conversations that she coached Zach when he was young and proud of his direction. He has great prospects for college scholarships for soccer. While there are a few colleges he prefers, it will all come down who offer the best scholarship.
It was a pleasure to spend a few hours with Zach and Amber!
Congratulations Zach! Best of luck with the scholarships and college!
